Take the risk of salmonella seriously!
Have you ever had a fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps after eating food like meat, eggs, or
raw vegetables that looked healthy and smelled and tasted as normal?
Do you know what caused it? A bacteria called salmonella!
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that salmonella makes millions of people sick,
claiming more than 100 thousands of others lives each year.
Salmonella lives in the intestines of animals like cows, turtles, and birds, contaminating meat,
eggs, and milk; even their feces can contaminate fruits and vegetables.
This bacterium also grows in processed foods like powdered milk and ice cream, and can survive
longer in fatty foods like peanut butter.
Humans can also be carriers of salmonella, like the famous chef Marie Malone!
Be careful! children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk.
This bacterium can even cross the placenta during pregnancy and cause miscarriage!
