Do you think that the food you put in the refrigerator is completely safe from bacteria?
It is interesting to know that some bacteria can grow in the cold of the refrigerator and cause food contamination.
One of such bacteria is Listeria.
This bacterium is everywhere, but the most important way it is transmitted to humans is through the consumption of contaminated food such as unpasteurized dairy products, sausages, raw fruits and vegetables, and cold and ready-to-eat foods such as salads.
Although the prevalence of the disease caused by this bacteria is relatively low, it can be very dangerous.
Listeria can cause serious problems, especially for people with weak immune systems such as the elderly, pregnant women and infants.
Following hygiene rules when cooking, keeping cooked and raw foods separate, cooking meat thoroughly, avoiding consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products, properly washing raw fruits and vegetables, and, if possible, heating food before consumption can help prevent getting sick with this bacterium.
